Curator tour in German
The French painter Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) died 300 years ago. His posthumous fame lives on to this day. Why did Watteau's pictorial motifs become so popular and why did they have such an influence not only on painting but also on arts and crafts?
A tour of the exhibition will introduce the most important protagonists of this success story. We will embark on a very special journey through time, from the store of the art dealer Edme-François Gersaint on the Pont Notre Dame in Paris to the fashion studio of Vivienne Westwood in London.
At the same time, visitors learn why the Prussian King Frederick II played an important role in making Watteau's works known in Prussia and why the painter Watteau was able to develop into a style icon of the royal court.
