The choir is an intangible cultural heritage of the Occident, the birth of tragedy and an essential building block of the opera genre. For Richard Wagner, the orchestra was the legitimate descendant of the ancient chorus.
The Corona Crisis did serious damage to the survival of the choir. The choir and orchestra disintegrated into their component parts. A dilemma for opera, because the essence of the genre is the coming together of the arts, their close exchange, the joint expenditure, the physical closeness that is not viable without contact.
This phase seems to be over and the theatre business is more or less trying to return to its old form. At the same time, the crisis has burned itself into the theatre brain, is no longer imaginable without it as a threat. And above all: additional socially global crises allow the biting metaphor to live on: society, and with it a choir, is falling apart.
Whether refugee, environmental, economic or energy crisis: we need the choir as an omniscient commentator of what the main actors are unable to say.
ALL OPEN - the overall project
With the ALLES OFFEN project, NOVOFLOT explores how opera could meet the current challenges as well as the consequences of the global crises in an original artistic way. The company would like to link the cultural technique to be found with another cultural heritage that has been particularly affected by the pandemic, rising inflation and the social changes of the digital age: with the retail trade; including department stores, small shops, galleries, clubs and restaurants, many of which were and are threatened with closure.
ALL OPEN is thus also an attempt, like the Greek choir once was, to give people of the most diverse cultures, the individuals, a meaningful mouthpiece in the course of closing communication streams.
ALL OPEN #1 "To you I will live here"
(revived as part of the Performing Arts Festival 2023)
ALL OFFEN #1 and #2 premiered in September 2022 with great success in Berlin's West. The former Casino Max Beth in Uhlandstraße, two former restaurants under the S-Bahn arches near Berlin Zoo, a former hamburger snack bar and the public space on the way from Steinplatz in Charlottenburg to these locations were performed.
Now #1 "Dir will ich leben hier" will experience a brilliant revival as an adaptation in Berlin-Mitte as part of the Performing Arts Festival.
ALL OPEN #3 "Acting Individually"
World premiere
After the local explorations in Berlin-Charlottenburg in September 2022, NOVOFLOT dedicates ALLES OFFEN #3 "Einzeln Handeln" to Friedrichstraße in Berlin-Mitte in June 2023.
In the area between Unter den Linden and Checkpoint Charlie, a parcours through such shops will be created, which were once built in promising times by investors acting individually. Here, the international team of composers, singers and performers move in, site-specific and specific. Temporarily, to be sure, but always pursuing the question of what a creative appeal through our choral conception can achieve and how it can constructively contribute to the crisis-ridden fabric.
