The zoetrope, also known as a magic lantern, which uses simple optical means to create the illusion of movement, was a popular toy in the 19th century. A sequence of individual images rotates in a drum and, when viewed through narrow slits, merges into a flowing sequence of movements. However, the movement does not progress, but repeats itself endlessly. Time stands still in the zoetrope.
Based on the theme of the exhibition Time is an Ocean, visitors to the open workshop can build their own zoetropes to take home: small wonder drums in which waves roll endlessly, birds fly on and on, figures circle tirelessly in dance, or raindrops create endless concentric rings in the water.
