On Thursday, we will be celebrating German Unity Day with street festivals, exhibitions, and special highlights. This time round there will be tips for the extra long weekend from Thursday to Sunday. The TV Tower will also be celebrating its birthday, David Hasselhoff will be singing, and there will be plenty of delicious coffee to keep you going. There is so much going on in Berlin that we found it difficult to limit ourselves to 11 tips, but here they are, our 11 top tips for this celebratory weekend.

Tip 1: German Unity Day

German Unity Day is on 3 October – the Berlin Wall finally fell exactly 30 years ago on 9 November, which led to the reunification of Germany. On German Unity Day, a street festival will be held on Straße des 17. Juni – right at the Brandenburg Gate. There will also be a big museum festival for the whole family at the Tränenpalast. And the Hoppegarten racecourse invites you to the German Unity race day, the highlight of the racing calendar.

When: 3 October
Where: Straße des 17. Juni, Mitte

Tip 2: 50th anniversary of the TV Tower

That’s not all the celebrations: the TV Tower, Berlin's highly visible landmark, is proudly turning 50! And will naturally celebrate this with a big birthday party. The Berliner Rundfunk will broadcast from the viewing platform, mascot “Tomi” will entertain the little ones – and many prizes await you in the tombola.

When: 3 October
Where: TV Tower, Panoramastraße 1a, Mitte

Tip 3: Giant flea market at Trabrennbahn Karlshorst

Strolling, browsing and shopping: you’re bound to find something at the giant flea market at Trabrennbahn Karlshorst. Around 700 traders will be offering their wares, such as antiques and designs, books, beautiful things for the home, second-hand fashion and so on.

When: 3 October, 9 am – 5 pm
Where: Trabrennbahn Karlshorst, Treskowallee 159, Köpenick

Tip 4: Pumpkin festival on Akazienstraße

In Berlin, we not only carve pumpkin heads on Halloween, but also celebrate the pumpkin with its very own festival, the Schöneberg Pumpkin Festival on Akazienstraße. There you will find all types of pumpkin varieties. Autumn can't taste any better!

When: 5 – 6 October
Where: Akazienstraße, Schöneberg

Tip 5: DAVID HASSELHOFF - Freedom! The Journey Continues Tour 2019

The Hoff is here: during his tour, David Hasselhoff will play his old and new songs on German Unity Day in Berlin. Among them, of course, will be “Looking for Freedom”, which inspired the masses at the Brandenburg Gate on New Year's Eve 1989.
I was there at the time and joined in the celebrations when we – East and West together at last – welcomed in the New Year. If you too have a personal story about the fall of the Berlin Wall, post it under the hashtag #wallyourstory.

When: 3 October
Wo: Max-Schmeling-Halle, Am Flakplatz 1, Prenzlauer Berg

Tip 6: Coffee Festival

Coffee … a pick-me-up and elixir of life. You can learn everything you need to know about coffee at the Berlin Coffee Festival in Markthalle Neun. Roasting houses and cafés will showcase their products and hold discussions on the Coffee Talk Stage. At the coffee market on 6 October, you can sample the incredible variety of brown beans.
Bring your mug with you or get a Kaffeeform cup for a small deposit – you won't get disposable cups at the festival.

When: 1 – 6 October
Where: Markthalle Neun, Eisenbahnstraße 42/43, Kreuzberg

Tip 7: Move iT! Die 90er Party

A journey back to the 90s awaits you at the Kesselhaus. Dance to the greatest hits of Captain Jack, Culture Beat, Snap!, Ace of Base and Haddaway and go back to the era after the reunification. Get ready to whip out your crop tops and platform shoes when “Rhythm is a dancer” starts playing.

When: 5 October
Where: Kesselhaus in der Kulturbrauerei, Knaackstraße 97, Prenzlauer Berg

Tip 8: 14. Berlin Graphic Days #14

On 3 October, mosques throughout Germany will open their doors for a mutual exchange of information. You will also be invited to a meal, too.

Friedrichstraße, with its elegant shops and Galeries Lafayette, is one of the major shopping streets in Berlin. For the street festival this weekend, the stretch between Französischer Straße and Mohrenstraße will be transformed into a large traffic-free pedestrian zone, so you can go for a stroll and linger awhile. Discover sustainable fashion from Berlin designers in the greenhouses and browse through the nearby shops, which are also open on Sundays.
Our colleagues will also be present at the street festival. There you can not only find more information but also take part in the Berlin HANDSHAPE.

When: 5 – 6 October
Where: Friedrichstraße, Mitte

Tip 11: The Reich Ministry of Labour 1933-1945

You can learn more about German history in the Topography of Terror, a place of remembrance on the premises of the SS headquarters, which provides information about the Gestapo, the SS and the Reich Security Head Office as well as temporary exhibitions on National Socialism. It is one of the most visited memorials in Berlin. The special exhibition in the topography “The Reich Ministry of Labour 1933-1945” illuminates the role of the Reich Ministry of Labour and how it exerted its influence.

When: Only until 8/10: Exhibition at the Topography of Terror Memorial
Where: Topography of Terror, Niederkirchnerstraße 8, Kreuzberg
