Joy to the world, now we sing

This weekend we light the third candle on the Advent wreath. Numerous concerts and performances get us in the mood for Christmas. But Berlin wouldn't be Berlin if there wasn't a lot going on besides the contemplative moments.

Tip 1: Christmas markets

Advent time is the time of the Christmas markets. And especially on the weekends many nice, small neighbourhood markets open their doors. Thus the KiezWeihnacht takes place on the 2nd and 3rd Advent weekend in Lichtenberg. In Köpenick, the Christmas Island from 13 to 15 December invites you to take a romantic stroll in front of Köpenicker Castle against the backdrop of Köpenicker. On the grounds of the old distillery Reinickendorf you can not only buy handicrafts at the weekends in the North Pole Winter Village, but also visit the local artists in their studios.

Tip 2: Advent concerts

The concerts and oratorios in the churches and concert halls in Advent get you in the mood for Christmas. In the Gedächtniskirche on Friday the NDR choir will sing pieces by Brahms, Britten and others at the Christmas concert "A Hymn to the Virgin". On Saturday at 3.30 pm you can hear emotional gospel at the Christmas concert with inspired! in the Gedächtniskirche. On Saturday Björn Casapietra will sing "Christmas Love Songs" in the Passionskirche and take you on a joyful Christmas journey.

Tip 3: Christmas songs in Volkspark Mariendorf

You'd rather sing yourself? Then join in the great Advent singing in the Volkspark Mariendorf. The Mariendorfer SV 06 and the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Mariendorf-Ost invite you to join the big choir. And if you're not sure about the lyrics: everyone gets a songbook and a candle for the contemplative atmosphere. Of course there will also be something to eat: Punch, cake and tasty food from the grill.
Admission is free, only one donation is requested.

Tip 4: Raphael in Berlin

Raphael's graceful Madonna paintings still enchant the observer today. And on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, the exhibition in the Gemäldegalerie gives you the unique opportunity to see the most beautiful Madonna pictures together. The Madonna of the Pinks will also come from London to the great meeting of the Madonnas as guest of honour, leaving England for the first time since the purchase of the museum.

Tip 5: The Nutckracker at Deutsche Oper

Just like "It's a wonderful life" or "A Christmas Carol", a visit to the ballet "The Nutcracker" has become a favourite Christmas tradition for many. The Staatsballett shows the Christmas classic after E.T. A. Hoffmann with the music of Tchaikovsky according to the traditions of the original. Enjoy the nostalgic ballet feerie with its magical charm when the nutcracker and the toy soldiers come to life.

Tip 6:  Winterleben at Museumsdorf Düppel

The last chance to visit the museum village Düppel before the winter break. You can cook, make music and carve together. In the blacksmith's shop on the village square a fire is burning. And warm your stomach with hot soup, stick bread from the fire and mulled wine.

Tip 7: Exhibition „Natürlich heute!“

The exhibition "Natürlich heute!" in the Labyrinth Kindermuseum Berlin presents the topics of environmental protection and sustainability for children and links them to the everyday life of children today. It's an exciting discovery tour through six different areas, which promote sustainable behaviour even among the little ones and inspire them for their environment.

Tip 7: An Odyssey

Tip 8: Family concert – Merry QUIZmas

The family concert is not only about listening to music, but also about an exciting quiz between two audience teams. Of course there will also be music, by the wind instruments of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The Christmas quiz is presented by horn player Sarah Willis together with Malte Arkona.

Tip 10: Original Bauhaus

The Bauhaus year is drawing to a close. The big anniversary exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie runs until the end of January, showing how important and influential the Bauhaus was for architecture and design - and still is today.
