It's the end of January and it's freezing cold in Berlin. No reason to curse the winter, because there is still a lot going on. From exhibitions and fairs to music events, we've once again put together the best that the weekend has to offer. We'll tell you in the weekend tips where you can get rid of the winter blues.
Tip 1: Visit soon: Green Week
For over 80 years the International Green Week has been taking place every year in January in Berlin - until Sunday you can go there. The most important international fair for food, agriculture and horticulture presents various international specialities and shows you exciting insights into topics such as sustainable raw materials, bio-energy and urban gardening. Finland is this year's partner country of the Green Week and will be represented with many special events and special offers.
When: until Sunday
Where: Messe Berlin
Tip 2: Tristan – T-Rex in the Museum of Natural History
Once again his stay has been extended: The T-Rex Tristan will remain in the Museum of Natural History and thus in Berlin until the end of March 2020. Therefore our tip: Take a look at one of the best preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex skeletons in the world. With a length of 12 metres, Tristan is truly impressive - and the only original T-Rex in Europe.
When: until 31th of March 2020
Where: Museum of Natural History
Tip 3: Photo exhibition „Leading Ladies“
Now we have already arrived in 2019, when the concept of the First Lady seems almost a bit outdated. But exactly this contradiction is taken up by the museum The Kennedys in its museum about the First Ladies Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. There are over 70 photographs by various photographers to be seen here, some of them are rare original photos. With the help of historical documents and rare film footage, the exhibition also aims to approach the self-image and tasks of a First Lady.
When: until 24th of February
Where: Museum The Kennedys
Tip 4: Harry PotterTM: The Exhibition
The Harry Potter™ exhibition will stay at Filmpark Babelsberg until March. You can experience the world of the sorcerer's apprentice for yourself: Hogwarts™, real costumes, pieces of equipment and the one or other creature from the films are part of it. A real must for fans.
When: until 10th of March
Where: Film park Babelsberg
Tip 5: Exhibition on women's suffrage regarding Berlin's district Steglitz-Zehlendorf
In 1919 women were allowed to vote for the first time after a long struggle in Germany. This exhibition also forms part of the celebrations - but with a special focus on the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf. With the help of nine women who fought for equal rights for women, the exhibition shows you the first results of a search for traces in the district.
When: daily from 10 am until 10th of March
Where: Schwartzsche Villa
Tip 6: Jazz festival Neukölln
The music school Paul Hindemith organizes the jazz festival Neukölln: Professors from several jazz colleges and winners of a competition for young musicians will perform at the festival. Since 2019 is the year of the saxophone, it will also receive special attention at the Jazz Festival - it will be shown in its entire diversity and in all facets of jazz.
When: from Friday until Sunday
Where: Schloss Britz
Tip 7: Dschabber
The Grips-Theater presents the European premiere of the play "Dschabber", which is about two young people who fall in love with each other despite cultural differences. However, they have to assert themselves against external resistance. On Friday there will even be a discussion with the audience (only in German).
When: Friday, 6pm and Saturday, 7.30pm
Tip 8: From Arts and Crafts to Bauhaus
2019 is the year of Bauhaus - events and exhibitions around the Bauhaus take place throughout the year. And not only in Berlin, but also in other cities such as Dessau and Leipzig. The Bröhan Museum presents the exhibition "From Arts and Crafts to Bauhaus", which presents the prehistory of the Bauhaus, e.g. the English Arts and Crafts movement. Big questions are: Does form have to take function into account? Is design art? In any case an exciting introduction to the anniversary year Bauhaus100.
When: until 5th of May
Tip 9: One last time: Berlin Ska City Festival
The seventh and last time you can go to the Berlin Ska City Festival on Saturday. Finally you can enjoy the best of the Ska-Festival landscape. The line-up consists of ska legends as well as unknown bands. Have a look.
Where: Huxleys Neue Welt (Huxleys New World)
Tip 10: Visit soon: Frank Gehry – Hans Scharoun: Strong Resonances / Zusammenklänge
The exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate presents the two architects Hans Scharoun and Frank Gehry, who never met each other. And yet their two great works - the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Berliner Philarmonie - are linked. The drawings and sketches convey a fascinating impression of the two visionary master architects. Of course, the exhibition is also exciting as part of the Bauhaus Year 2019.
When: until 10th of February
Where: Brandenburg Gate Foundation at Pariser Platz
Tip 11: Visit soon: Bijoux Bijoux! - Fashion jewellery from Chanel to Dior
Hurry up: Until Sunday you can visit the jewellery exhibition Bijoux Bijoux! - Fashion jewellery from Chanel to Dior at the Museum of Decorative Arts. Here you can see the most beautiful designs of great fashion houses and famous designers from 1930 to the present day. These are exhibited for the first time in Berlin and show the interaction of jewellery and fashion. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Dior jewellery.
When: until Sunday
