Happy Birthday Bauhaus

The New Year is gaining momentum and it's really going to start this weekend. The Bauhaus year begins with the opening festival, the Green Week serves delicacies from all over the world, and the first film festivals open the festival season. And of course there are numerous other events, 11 of which we present to you in our top selection.

Tip 1: 100 Years of Bauhaus – The Opening Festival

100 years of Bauhaus - that is a reason to celebrate. With concerts, theatre performances, installations, dance productions and many other events, the Bauhaus Year starts with a furious opening festival. 25 productions with over 100 artists from all over the world show the influence of the Bauhaus from its exciting history to contemporary art.

Tip 2: Green Week

For over 80 years now, the International Green Week has been taking place in Berlin in January. The most important international fair for food, agriculture and horticulture presents various international specialities and gives you exciting insights into topics such as sustainable raw materials, bio-energy and urban gardening. Finland will also be represented as partner country of this year's Green Week with many events and special offers.

Tip 3: Fantasy Filmfest – White Nights

The horror goes into the next round. The popular Fantasy Filmfest in summer is joined by the White Nights in January, during which zombies, monsters and other creepy creatures cavort on the screen in the SonyCenter for two days. Among the ten films shown are highlights such as "Burning", celebrated in Cannes, "Destroyer" with Nicole Kidman and "The Favourite", which has just won an award at the Golden Globes.

Tip 4: Ultraschall – Festival for new Music

20 years of Ultraschall - the festival for new music celebrates its birthday. If you want to discover what the latest works in contemporary music are, you've come to the right place at Utraschall Festival. With exciting premieres and current productions, it offers a multi-faceted offer of the latest pieces of music.

Tip 5: Hellas Filmbox

Das öffentlich geförderte Kino Babylon am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz bietet ein abwechslungsreiches Programm mit Filmreihen, Retrospektiven und Festivals.

The current Greek film is the focus of Hellas Filmbox Berlin film festival in January. With exciting directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos and Rachel Tsangari, Greek cinema has attracted international attention in recent years, so that a look inside the film box is certainly worthwhile.

Tip 6: Stories in Jurts

In January, the inner courtyard of the Sony Center is transformed into a Mongolian village when the cosy yurts are set up. In the tents, 30 authors read from their works under the motto "Communities - Roots and Change". In the Jurten special night on Saturday, they will exclusively present debut novels. The entrance is free.

Tip 7: The Music of John Williams

John Williams is one of the greatest and most famous film composers ever. The world-famous soundtracks of "Harry Potter", "The Great White Shark", "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" come from him. So, sit back at the concert, close your eyes and watch the white shark swim in front of your inner eye.

Tip 8: Festival "Krimi-Nacht an der M8 - 3. Lesenacht an M8"

"Up to TRAM line M8 ... boarding please!" Along the tram line M8 you can stop at different stations and listen to readings with different focuses. The entertaining offer ranges from satire and erotic stories to exciting short stories and short stories in a nutshell.

Tip 9: Hope@9pm - Musik und Talk

NUR zur redaktionellen Berichterstattung oder der Bewerbung des Konzerthaus Berlin verwenden! Das Konzerthaus steht als zentrales Gebäude auf dem Gendarmenmarkt im Berliner Ortsteil Mitte. Das klassizistische Bauwerk ist eines der Hauptwerke des Architekten Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

At nine o'clock in the evening, when the city comes to rest, violinist Daniel Hope invites you to music and discussions in the Werner-Otto-Saal of the Konzerthaus in the tradition of the Berlin salon culture. This Saturday he talks to his guest Dieter Kosslick. In February, Dieter Kosslick will host the Berlinale for the last time, which he has presided over as director since 2001.

Tip 10: Bijoux Bijoux! - Fashion jewellery from Chanel to Dior

Last chance: Until 27 January you can watch the jewellery exhibition Bijoux Bijoux! - Fashion jewellery from Chanel to Dior at the Museum of Decorative Arts. The most beautiful designs of large fashion houses and famous designers from 1930 to the present day are exhibited for the first time in Berlin and show the interaction of jewellery and fashion. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Dior jewellery.

Tip 11: Frank Gehry – Hans Scharoun: Strong Resonances / Zusammenklänge

The exhibitions in Max Liebermann at the Brandenburg Gate present the two architects Hans Scharoun and Frank Gehry. The drawings and sketches convey a fascinating impression of the work of the two visionary master architects. Take a look at Gehry's designs for the Museum Island, which have not been implemented, and then combine your visit to the exhibition with a walk to the Museum Island.
And of course the exhibition is also an exciting introduction to the Bauhaus year, which starts this weekend (see tip 1)!
