Mid-June – it at last feels like summer and the official beginning of summer is also almost here. We are going to enjoy the weekend to the full – of course we will be out a lot, day and night. There's a lot going on once again. We've picked out the best the weekend has to offer you. Here are our weekend tips with the 11 best events and tips in Berlin.

Tip 1: Staatsoper für alle (State Opera for all)

Staatsoper for all

A Berlin summer classic: The Staatsoper für alle on Bebelplatz. The Staatskapelle of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden with Daniel Barenboim invites all Berliners and visitors to Berlin to listen to classical music in the open air. Pieces by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Johannes Brahms will be played. Not a classical music fan – no matter, go along and be open to conviction. And the atmosphere is simply great every time anyway.

Our tip: Take a blanket and picnic basket with you.

When: Sunday from 13:00

Where: Bebelplatz

Tip 2: Long Night of the Sciences

Long night of the sciences

The nights are getting shorter and milder – the perfect time for the Long Nights in Berlin. This weekend the Long Night of the Sciences takes place in various scientific institutions. And there's a lot to learn: How drunk does a chocolate get you? Or: How can digitalisation and virtualisation influence road traffic? The answers promise to be exciting.

When: Saturday and Sunday

Where: Various locations

This year's theme is "Water of Life", illustrated with exhibitions, concerts, lectures and guided tours. Make sure not to miss this and talk to people of other religions and world views.

It is now 70 years since the Berlin Airlift – reason enough to celebrate. The transport planes that supplied West Berlin in 1948 and 1949 during the blockade by the Soviet Union are flying once again! 40 machines are to take off together and fly over Berlin. So don't forget to look up at the sky on this weekend.

When: Saturday, 17:00 and Sunday, 13:00

Where: In the Berlin sky

Ephraim-Palais

In the year of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall you should not miss this exhibition about East Berlin. In the Ephraim Palace, the Stadtmuseum Berlin and the Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam dedicate their exhibition to the history of the capital of the GDR, East Berlin. It touches on urban and everyday life in the city. You will learn how East Berlin was both the living world and the centre of power of the SED.

Who needs the sea when you can have Berlin? With the countless lakes and bathing establishments in and around Berlin, the choice is not easy. Perhaps you'd like to try out a new lake for yourselves? No matter if open-air swimming pool or natural lake – in Berlin’s neighbourhoods and the surrounding area you can choose where you want to sunbathe. We hope you have a lot of fun – and don't forget to apply sun lotion.

We think it's time again for a trip with friends to a beer garden or a beach bar. Berlin's oldest beer garden is Prater on Kastanienallee and the highest beach bar is Deck5 above the roofs of Schönhauser Allee. But you will find a beer garden or a beach bar in almost every neighbourhood. Enjoy your after-work beer or cocktail!

Vegan ice cream, homemade ice cream, the good, old spaghetti ice cream and such special varieties as white chocolate, orange and ginger or blueberry cheesecake – there is almost nothing in Berlin's world of ice cream that doesn't exist. The view promises the best ice cream weather – the ideal opportunity to try out the many ice cream parlours and find your favourite.
