Spandau: A fairy tale landscape

Spandau is older than Berlin. Spandau has the oldest signs of settlement and civilisation in all Berlin. Here, history is vibrantly alive! Take a day out – on the trail of Spandau’s hidden gems. The best place to start your day out is in the lovely Gut Neukladow park. Once through the old gateway, you have a view of the enchanting grounds, gnarled old trees and meandering paths. The main path leads straight to the early neo-classical manor house, from 1800 to 1806 home to the mother of Germany’s “Iron Chancellor” Otto von Bismarck. Today, the house is a cosy café with a spreading beer garden - just perfect for a coffee and a snack, and to enjoy the stunning views across the Wannsee lake.

Further down Kladower Damm, around Lönnrotweg and Topeliusweg, there is an estate of 377 small Finnish-style terraced houses 5 built in the 1950s. The wooden parts for these two-storey terraced houses came directly from Finland. The houses, in shades of grey, yellow and red, were designed to help solve the post-war housing shortage. The tour continues down Kladower Damm to Ritterfelddamm. There, take the 135 bus to the Gutsstrasse stop and the picturesque Gross Glienicke manor park and grounds on the shores of a lake. A piece of the Berlin Wall stands lost on a meadow, recalling the border that divided Germany for so many years. The East German border guards patrolled the track running directly behind, now part of the Berlin Wall Trail. On a walk along the shoreline, you may discover other traces of the old border complex. There’s more history further east with a ruined tower, an old well and the family grave of the estate’s owners.
