Berlin: poor and literate

Trendy lesbian/queer gathering place

In Berlin’s trendy Prenzlauer Berg district, between the Mauerpark with its remnants of the Berlin Wall and the Schönhauser Allee nightlife district, poor and literate has opened as a lesbian/queer gathering place on Kopenhagener Straße. poor and literate is a café by day and a bar by night and includes a small book shop, “Virginia Woolf’s Library” for some on-site reading, a small stage, a film club and a gallery, all on just 40 m2.

The gallery and film club have an international focus and have rotating shows of paintings, photos, films and video installations by Scandinavian, queer and other artists from all over the world. Poor and literate is open to people of all genders and orientations, but is primarily a space for women and those who identify as queer.
