Berlin - the city of museums

The impressive museum on the famous Museum's Island presents 19th century art. Works by Adolph von Menzel, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Max Liebermann and Louis Corinth are shown.

Until now, the museum's programmatic emphasis exclusively on women artists is unique. Former special exhibitions mainly portrayed artists from the 20th century and thus gave some of them the first public attention after World War II.

Joint venture from Deutsche Bank and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation: each year three to four important exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, many of which showcase a work specially commissioned by an artist.

Classicist sculptures from the early 19th century: works by Johann Gottfried Schadow, Christian Friedrich Tieck, Christian Daniel Rauch, Emil Wolff, Theodor Kalide, Ridolfo Schadow, and August Kiss. Documentation of the life and work of the Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The museum hosts one of the world's most important collections of European paintings from the 13th - 18th century with about 2,700 paintings. Masterpieces from all epochs, including paintings by Eyck, Bruegel, Dürer, Raffael, Tizian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Rubens are shown.

The Gipsformerei is the largest of its kind in the world. Since more than 150 years, the Gipsformerei produces replies of sculptures. The museum presents sculptures from various periods and regions.

The Hamburger Bahnhof exhibits the most important collection of contemporary art in Berlin, with works by Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Cy Tombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and many other innovative contemporary artists. Painting, sculptures, graphics, photography, video, multimedia works, room, and light installations of the collections of the National Gallery, the Erich Marx Collection are presented.

Berlins oldest remaining palace. In 1542 Prince-Elector Joachim II commissioned a Renaissance palace to be built on the banks of Lake Grunewald. Remodelled in a Baroque style in the early 18th century. Collection of paintings including works by Rubens and Cranach. Dutch and German paintings from the 17th century.

The Jüdische Museum Berlin (Jewish Museum Berlin) is housed in the impressive new museum building designed by Daniel Libeskind. The permanent exhibition traces the high and low points of German-Jewish history from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The Kunstbibliothek (art library) with 350,000 volumes is one of the most famous special libraries for aesthetics in Germany.

Extensive collection of "art on paper": one of the world's best graphic collections with 80,000 hand drawings and about 520,000 printed graphic sheets. Including works by Pisanello, Dürer, Breughel the Elder and from Rembrandt to Picasso and Beuys.

The Käthe Kollwitz Museum, which opened in 1986, presents the work of Käthe Kollwitz on four stories. Käthe Kollwitz was born in Königsberg in 1867 and died in Moritzburg near Dresden in 1945 after living and working in Berlin for more than 50 years. Sculptural works, drawings, printed graphics and posters. Special exhibitions.

Max Liebermann's summer house and garden in Wannsee as an exhibition venue and a place to linger. Built in 1910, with a garden that was shaped by his own ideas and which inspired Liebermann in more than 200 paintings.

As important exhibition hall in Berlin, the Martin-Gropius-Bau shows temporary exhibitions of international rank.

First-class collection of paintings and sculptures from the classical modernist period (Picasso, Giacometti, Klee, Cezanne, Matisse, Braque, van Gogh, Laurens, and others). More than 70 exhibits of Picasso's work form the centerpiece of the exhibition.

Permanent exhibition with a collection of unusual objects with their own history as Walter Benjamin's typwriter or a piece of iron from the former GDR.

The museum presents changing exhibitions on the life and work of Helmut Newton, one of the most improtant fashion and portrait photograhpers of the 20th century. Newton loaned a vast collection of photographs to the museum for exhibition. The Kaisersaal of the Museum of Photography displays installations by contemporary photographers and artists.

Permanent exhibition "Look at this city!" - the history and cultural history of Berlin from the Middle Ages to the present day: the royal residence, "Berlin's middle class - pictures of urban life", educated Berlin in the Age of Enlightenment, artistic modernism, Berlin under the swastika, a divided city, a reunified city. The Neue Nationalgalerie contains an exclusive collection of modern art: Edvard Munch and Oskar Kokoschka are exhibited beside Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and George Grosz. International artists including Picasso, Léger, De Chirico, Dalì, Magritte and Max Ernst also benefit from the admirable backdrop of the building constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

The Berlin dependance of the Emil-Nolde-Foundation Seebüll shows special exhibitions with works by Emil Nolde on around 800sq.metres of exhibition space.

Schloß Charlottenburg, the largest and most beautiful palace in Berlin, is a shining example of baroque architecture. It was built from 1695-99 as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte, the consort of Elector Friedrich III. Knobelsdorff constructed the eastern wing from 1740-46. From 1787-91, Carl Langhans constructed the palace theater as an extension to the orangery wing.

This pleasure palace was built in 1690 in a Dutch style and was extended in 1719 to create a prestigious residence. Richly decorated staircase, Classical ballroom and wall panelling, as well as 18th century works of fine and applied art. Concerts and special events.

After a long period of restauration, the Villa opened in spring 2005 as art-gallery and domicile of the Kulturbüro City West. The Villa Oppenheim shows special exhibitions with painting, object art, installations, photography and video art by contemporary artist.
