Orientation support for blind and visually handicapped people

Metro · © BTM/WeigelThe public transportation of Berlin (BVG) has installed guidance stripes in over 40 subway stations. the surface of these stripes is corrugated to mark the edge of the platforms.
Many city train stations are also equipped with these stripes, a lot of traffic lights apply special signals and switches that react by touch.

A new service website www.absv.de informs (in German only) about the station and the guide system.

Deutsches Blinden-Museum

The Museum for blind persons is located in the district Berlin-Steglitz. It displays an exhibition about the history and difficulty of being blind. A great part of the exhibits may be touched, so they can be "grasped" in another sense.

Scent and tactile garden in the Botanical Garden

Botanical GardenThe scent and tactile garden offers blind and visually handicapped people the opportunity to discover the variety of the flora by the scent and the sense of touch. For this purpose the plants are arranged in high beds.

The imaginary manufacture in the Oranienstraße

For 120 years the workshop for blind people in the district Kreuzberg had been producing brushes, rulers, combs and swabs in manual work. In 1998 a group of young designers engineered a new line of products. Accessoires such as the note-brush or the swab for lefthanded are supposed to animate the reflection about normality.
