From Husemannstraße to Kollwitzplatz and the Wasserturm (Water Tower)

WasserturmThe area Prenzlauer Berg, one of the districts in Germany with most children, has many different faces. You can still find the original, not refloated tenements in Wilhelminian style, but there are also areas that have totally changed their appearance in the meantime. The district is well known for its way of life, which attracts many students, artists and lateral thinkers from the whole federal territory.

Nächster U-Bahnhof / Nearest underground station U2 Eberswalder Straße
Tram-Linie / Tram line M10 Husemannstraße

We start our tour in Husemannstraße. Take the streetcar from the underground station Eberwalderstraße to the stop Husemannstraße.
Driving time: 3 min.

KollwitzplatzYou can experience the feeling of Berlin in the late 19th century in Husemannstraße that diverges from Danziger Straße. The street has been restored prior to reunification. Here you will find old corner shops, street pumps, old arc lamps and so-called basement flats as you can see in the books of Berlin's famous drawer Heinrich Zille. Many of the house-facades are brightly ornated. The Café 1900 (1), where different artists expose their works, is situated at the end of the street, on the right side. Encircled by trees, you will be able to watch the goings at Kollwitzplatz enjoying the good cuisine.

Houses surround Kollwitzplatz (2), but it is nevertheless very bright and leafy. The playground with the sand box is perfect for scrambling and digging. Next to the playground, you will see a nice sculpture casted in bronze that portrays Berlin's great draftswoman and sculptress Käthe Kollwitz. Everybody, young and old, enjoys lying in the meadow behind the playground and taking a bath in the sun or relaxing.
On Thursdays and on Saturdays it is however not very calm around the Kollwitzplatz. At this time, many merchants build up their stalls for the weekly market.

It is not very far from here to the Wasserturm (Water Tower) (3) between Belforter Straße und Knaackstraße. The so-called "dicke Hermann" has already existed in the year 1877 and has served the purpose as a reservoir. The playground at the Wasserturm invites playing ball or building castles out of sand and water.

The Indoor playground Limpopo offers on 1000m² enough space to rampage and play in bad weather. The three diversified courts are well adapted for children of different ages. The Limpopo Kinderland is situated in the Schönhauser Allee 161a.

Herefrom the next underground station is Senefelderplatz.
