Berlin for Children and Families - Hackesche Höfe & more
Download as PDF (266 KB)
We start our little walkaway through the so called Spandauer Vorstadt at the suburban train station Hackescher Markt. Here, the high and black-marble facade of the famous Hackesche Höfe (1) catches already your eye. You have to transcend a strongly cruised cross-way on which the cars and the yellow streetcars pave their ways before you can discover the nine individual courts. The fashion-stores and shops for emblazonment of Berlin's designers invite to a shopping stroll in the rear courts, which are also inhabited. You will also find a couple of handcraft factories that you can visit, e.g. the printing plant or the workshop where picture frames are manufactured. Those who are very curious will certainly find the court where the sand box with the big chestnut is located. Tip for bookworms and fans of audiobooks: If the children like splashing or romping on a playground, you should now leave Hackesche Höfe and turn into Oranienburgerstraße. You will pass by small fashion shops and cafés. After a few minutes, you will see on the left side the park Monbijoupark (3) that is zoned on the other side by river Spree. This small green oasis in the busy quarter offers adventure and repose for both - young and old. In the summertime, you will daily find a lot of space for splashing in Kinderbad Monbijou. The open-air bath possesses a wading pool and a swimming pool for non-swimmers, slides and springboards. The grassy areas invite you for relaxing and bathing in the sun. You should bring something to eat from home, as there is no catering in the open-air bath. The Monbijoupark is a great place playing in the meadow or having picnics and watching other people. In order to reach the playground you go towards Kinderbad Monbijou and then you turn to yours right. Nothing gets now in the way of romping at the jungle gym or on the slide and of hiding in the small tunnel. In order to get back to the suburban train station Hackescher Markt, you just orient on the elevated railway where trains clatter over. The best way is along the S-Bahn-arches and after a few metres you will reach the station. For those who like to go to suburban train and underground station Friedrichstraße take the direction contrarily to Kinderbad Monbijou along the bank of river Spree. You will pass altogether 3 bridges until you reach the station. The first one is Monbijou-Brücke that leads to Bode-Museum. Continuing your way along Spree you will promenade through green colonnades and will reach at last Ebert-Brücke. The rest of the way to Friedrichstraße leads to the cast-stock Weidendammer-Brücke, which you will cross having a great view over Spree and the Museumsinsel (Museum Island). You pass the Friedrichsstraße straight on and reach at the end the great suburban train station Friedrichstraße. Download as PDF (266 KB)
