Berlin on two Days
1st Day

For those with two days to spend in Berlin there are basically two possibilities for sightseeing: either spread the "Berlin in one Day" route over two days, spending the first in the east part of the city and the second in Tiergarten and the west, or use day two to extend your Berlin programme to include additional sights not covered by Berlin on one Day.
Alternative suggestion:
Having finished the tour of Berlin's inner city east and west on the first day, the second day can be used to explore more outlying districts and take in some of the city centre sights that couldn't be included on the original tour.

2nd Day

We can start at Schloss Charlottenburg (Charlottenburg Palace), one-time summer residence of the Prussian kings. The fine baroque and rococo interiors are well worth a visit, as is the park and the small lakes and fountains. The building across the street from the Palace is home to the Berggruen Collection of modern paintings featuring such artists as Picasso and Klee. Art nouveau lovers will be fascinated by the inspiring furniture, vases and objets d'art from this era on permanent show in the Bröhan Museum.

Bus M45, 109

Enter bus M45 in direction Johannesstift or bus 109 in direction Airport Tegel and get off at Schloss Charlottenburg.

Driving time:
ca. 15 minutes

We can now leave Charlottenburg and step back into Berlin's past – toMitte, where the Middle Ages, with a little help from the present, can be relived in the Nikolaiviertel (Nikolai Quarter), a series of narrow alleyways spreading out from the Nikolaikirche (Nikolai Church) and abundant with restaurants offering typical Berlin food in quaint surroundings.

Bus M45
U 2

At Schloss Charlottenburg take bus M45 in direction Hertzallee to underground station Ernst-Reuter-Platz and change to underground U2 in direction Pankow. Get off at station Klosterstraße.

Driving time:
ca. 40 minutes

Off again, this time to the area known as Spandauer Vorstadt, once a centre of Jewish life in Berlin. At the end of Oranienburgerstraße stands Tacheles, an alternative cultural centre set up in the ruins of a bombed-out department store. The Jewish synagogue in Oranienburgerstraße has been fully restored and its splendid golden dome lends the street a certain grandeur. In recent years this area, which includes the Hackescher Markt, has become popular among the Berlin 'scene', with countless cafes and restaurants springing up everywhere. There are also trendy boutiques tempting you to go in and buy – or just wander round and marvel at the trendy fashion wear, accessories and one-off designs.

To get to Oranienburger Straße, enter underground U2 in direction Pankow to Alexanderplatz, where you change for the suburban train to Hackescher Markt.

Driving time:
ca. 10 minutes

Tip:
For the artistic-minded a stroll through some of the myriad galleries in Augustastraße is a must.
A pleasant way to end the day is with a visit to the district of Prenzlauer Berg. The tenement blocks on squares like Kollwitzplatz and in the neighbouring side streets with their characteristic rear courtyards are typical examples of Berlin working class housing in the 19th Century. A walk round Kollwitzplatz and the nearby Water Tower is a wonderful lesson on Berlin's architectural traditions. If that doesn't hold your attention then one of the many restaurants here will, especially those offering excellent Russian and Jewish cuisine.
Culture at various levels is to be had at the Kulturbrauerei, the site of a disused brewery now redeveloped and the location for a variety of cultural activities.
