Berlin - city of science
There are coming more and more scientists to Berlin and therefore the research districts thrive and prosper. Some of the most important facilities and institutions will be introduced at the following pages to give an insight of the scientific world in Berlin. There are many opportunities to research, to learn and to teach.
Research and technology districts
Research district Adlershof: The biggest research and technology park is located in the southeast of Berlin. Besides the six institutes of the Humboldt university and other twelve facilities of research, more than 370 companies are working altogether.
They are mainly concentrate on physics, chemistry and biology. Since 1998 it is also the location of the High-luminosity radiant source BESSY II.

Universities and academies in Berlin
The universities in Berlin are famous far beyond the city borders with more than 139.000 young people studying here. Especially the Humboldt university is well-known and is said to has been once the model for the Harvard university.

The oldest university in the city offers a variety of subjects. Many of them have a good reputation worldwide, such as medicine at the university hospital Charité. More
University Freie Universität:
The FU is amongst the most popular universities in Germany and with more than 42.000 students the largest educational institution in Berlin. Some faculties are still scattered in small houses in the southwest of Berlin, but it is planned to concentrate the subjects in just a few buildings. More
Technical university (Technische Universität):
This university has its main focus on natural and engineering science, but offers arts degrees as well. Most of the buildings are situated in the city centre around the street "Straße des 17.Juni" in Charlottenburg. More
University of arts (Universität der Künste):
The youngest and smallest university in the capital emanated from the former academy of arts. More than 4000 students can choose from a variety of subjects like sculpture or scenic writing. More

Libraries and archives:
National library (Staatsbibliothek):
It is the largest all-around library in Germany and separated in two buildings in the city. With more than 10 mill. volumes and a miscellaneous international service the library is very popular beyond Germanys borders. The architecture of the building in the Potsdamer Straße is very impressive. More
Library of state Berlin (Zentral- und Landesbibliothe Berlin):
The former American memorial library and municipal library merged in 1995 to the Central library. Today the buildings in Kreuzberg and Mitte house more than 2.5 mill. electronic and printed press, which is used by 7000 people every day. So this library is the most popular cultural institution in Berlin. More
Archive of state (Landesarchiv Berlin):
The archive of state is responsible for the public authorities and institutions and it is collecting documents accrue in the administration for centuries. Before the papers are published, they must be secured and organized. More
Film archiv - Deutsche Kinemathek:
The library owns papers about film and TV, an important collection of film specific references and an impressive stock of international film press.

The archive collects the documents of the central organs of the Federal Republic of Germany (since 1949), the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990), the occupied zones (1945-1949), the German Reich (1867/71) and the German Confederation (1815-1866). More
Bundesarchiv Filmarchiv:
The filmarchiv, part of the Bundesarchiv, is one of the largest film archives worldwide and the central German film archive. In 1990 the film archive of the GDR was included. The main function is to collect and to restore the German film production. More
