Entertainment with a tradition

The charm of the past is still alive and well at the Wintergarten today. A sky full of stars, red velvet and dark wood create a unique atmosphere. Glass display cases filled with costumes and props tell the story of the venue’s long tradition. Like no other name, the Wintergarten is inextricably linked to Berlin’s long tradition of entertainment.

A brief look back

In 1887, a variety theatre opened in the winter garden of the Hotel Central on Friedrichstraße. One evening in 1895, there were no acrobats or exotic dancers performing; instead, the first commercial film screening took place , featuring the Skladanowsky brothers’ Bioskop presentations. A date that made film history. Following various renovations, it became one of the largest and most advanced theatres in the whole of Europe. Even back then, a starry sky illuminated the auditorium. Grand revues and shows were performed on stage – and the Wintergarten became a symbol of the Roaring Twenties in Berlin. In 1944, the building fell victim to the bombs and was closed. The name and the spirit it embodied remained alive in the memories of Berliners. In 1992, a new theatre called the Wintergarten opened on Potsdamer Straße. This too marked a turning point: previously, the site had been home to the legendary Club Quartier Latin, where Berlin punk bands performed in the 1970s and 1980s.

With the fall of the Wall and reunification , a new era dawned in Berlin’s nightlife too. So it was fitting that the Wintergarten successfully brought the glitz and glamour of the 1920s back to the stage.

Marvel at the spectacle – and enjoy your meal!

In the good old variety theatre tradition, the Wintergarten is a restaurant-theatre. You can order a three-course meal or just a light snack and drinks to accompany the show.
