Volkspark Klein-Glienicke and Pfaueninsel
Romantic paths along the Havel
Accessible again from 27 June!
This excursion to Volkspark Klein-Glienicke and Pfaueninsel starts at the last stop for Berlin city bus 218. The stop is located next to a pub with a terrace that offers great views of the River Havel.
From here, a ferry takes you over to the romantic Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island), where a palace, the eponymous peacocks, fountains and winding paths immerse visitors into a fairytale world. For longer walks and hikes, you can choose to walk down the street leading from the pub; this road takes you along the riverfront all the way to Potsdam. The pavement is a great place for pushing a pram, cycling or simply strolling along to enjoy the beautiful weather, nature and views of the waterfront. If you like a more varied experience, you might want to take a left in a short while onto the paved path that heads into the forest. This path leads to the church of Saint Peter and Paul, which was built in the Russian style. Later, the trail rejoins the paved route and you’ll soon come upon an inn that’s an inviting spot to take a break. From this point, you have your choice of heading further south along the shore, past the Märchenteich (“Fairy Tale Pond”) or across the park. You will then see the Glienicke Remise Palace and the Jadgschloss Glienicke (Hunting Lodge) and can head over to Potsdam via the legendary Glienicke Bridge [site of many spy exchanges during the Cold War].
