Beautifully restored by star architect David Chipperfield, the New Museum opened in October 2009. It now presents the treasures of the Egyptian Museum and the Papyrus Collection along with the collections of the Museum of Pre-History and Early History and parts of the antiquities collection – part of a brand new exhibition offering visitors a fascinating insight into the origins of mankind.

Visitors can discover the history of the ancient world from the Near East to the Atlantic, and from North Africa to Scandinavia, over thousands of years. The development of pre-historical and early Eurasian cultures, from the Palaeolithic period through to the High Middle Ages, is presented in unparalleled breadth and depth.

Renowned archaeological treasures, such as the bust of Nefertiti and the Egyptian Museum’s entire collection of Armana Art and papyrus collection, are combined with world-famous exhibits from the Museum of Pre-history and Early History, such as the Le Moustier Neanderthal skull and Heinrich Schliemann’s collection of antiquities from Troy, to form a unique panorama of the early history of mankind.

The museum building is remarkable in itself: built to the plans of Friedrich August Stüler in 1841-1859, it has been completely restored since 2003 under British architect David Chipperfield. He anchored the main body of the museum in the architectural idiom of the present day. The result is that the resplendent richness of Stüler’s late classicism is now brought into a delightful dialogue with Chipperfield’s own strict language of form.
