An excellent training, uncountable international contacts, and the creative ambiance that is Berlin - exactly these are the reans why about half of the around 600 students at the Academy for Music ‘Hanns Eisler’ come from all over the world to study in Berlin. The focal points of the degree courses include practical work and stage experience. And because of the many high-calibre partnerships, young musicians and conductors, singers, producers and composers have the opportunity to work with first-rate orchestras.

The academy was originally founded in 1950 by the GDR Ministry for Public Education, as no music university existed in East Berlin at the time. In 1964, the name of the academy was extended to include 'Hanns Eisler', the famous German-Austrian composer and music theorist.

Today the institute, which is still located at the Gendarmenmarkt at the back of the Concert House Berlin, comprises a symphonic orchestra, a chamber music orchestra, a choir, a studio orchestra, a symphonic wind orchestra and numerous other musical formations. The academy’s students produce more than 400 concerts, musical theatre presentations and recital evenings each year. The formation of the Kurt-Singer-Institute for Musician Health, the Institute for New Music, and the Jazz Institute Berlin provide an insight into the broad and innovative educational offering of the academy.
