With its three venues, HAU1, HAU2 and HAU3 , HAU Hebbel am Ufer stands at the nexus between theatre, dance, and performance art. Music, the visual arts, and theoretical debates are also permanently on the programme. International co-productions and projects from the Berlin and (inter)national theatre and dance scenes are developed and performed here.

In November 2012, HAU Hebbel am Ufer began the new season under the artistic management of Annemie Vanackere. The artistic team she manages looks for ways and methods of speaking where radically different social and global relationships can be expressed artistically.

Vanackere thus continues the direction of founding directors Nele Hertling, who from 1989 to 2003 transformed the former Hebbel theatre from an empty stage to an internationally renowned event venue. She also follows in the footsteps of her predecessor Matthias Lilienthal, under whose management the theatre was chosen as “theatre of the year” in 2004 and 2012 and who was awarded the national design prize in 2007 for its corporate design.

The venues HAU1, HAU2, HAU3

HAU1, the former Hebbel Theatre, is also one of Berlin’s architectural theatre jewels.

In HAU2, the second biggest of the HAU stages, saw the premières of “Testament” by She She Pop and “Hate Radio”as part of the Berliner Theatertreffen.

HAU3 is the smallest of the three buildings, seating about 100 people, and thus the ideal venue for newcomers to present their innovative dance and theatre productions.

Many directors and choreographers have begun their international careers here, while many international artists have found their way onto the Berlin scene via HAU.

The three performance venues are located in three separate buildings within close proximity to one another:
