Galerie im Körnerpark
Galerie im Körnerpark
An oasis of culture in leafy surroundings
Around 100 years ago, the entrepreneur Franz Körner made the city of Berlin an offer it couldn't refuse. His gravel pit lay in the area between Jonasstrasse, Schierkerstrasse, Wittmannsdorferstrasse and Selkestrasse. Körner wanted to donate the site to the city – under the proviso that it would create a park that would bear his name.
Today, a long staircase with balustrades sweeps down to the lawn below, which is five to seven metres below street level. The water splashes down six steps before being sprayed back up into the air by a fountain. Small canals, trimmed hedges, a colourful flower garden and plane trees make the Körnerpark one of the most beautiful green spaces in Berlin.
In the mid 1980s, the Galerie in Körnerpark gallery opened in the rooms of the orangery. Its high glass facade offers picturesque views of the park and a special backdrop for the art on display here: works by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists as well as less established art. The "Summer in the Park" series of free concerts is held on the terrace of the Parkcafé every summer.
