From the largest store in the GDR to a department store for a cosmopolitan city
The Galeria Kaufhof, located centrally in the eastern city centre, offers a distinguished range of goods aimed at an international clientele. It is the flagship of the Galeria Kaufhof chain and the prototype of a new type of department store for a cosmopolitan city. Visitors can explore numerous designer shops arranged over 35,000 square metres. The focus is not only on trendy fashion and life style goods, but also features a large multimedia and delicatessen department. Friendly, customer-oriented services are fundamental to the concept of the store.
The entrepreneur Herman Tietz was the first to build a store on the site, which was destroyed during the Second World War. The current building was constructed between 1967 and 1970 to house the HO-Centrum department store, the largest in the GDR. The building was refurbished between 2004 and 2006 and an atrium was added, roofed by a large glass dome. The store boasts a total of 20 escalators with a length of up to 24 metres, some of the largest cantilevered escalators in any department store in the world.
