Distel Cabaret Theatre
Distel Cabaret Theatre
Hurrah, humour is scheduled!
In 1953, with “Hurra, Humor ist eingeplant" (Hurrah, humour is scheduled), the Distel Cabaret Theatre began running its performances with its very own house ensemble on the Friedrichstraße in Berlin-Mitte. Since then, intelligent and sassy political satires belong to the house’s daily programme.
Three cabaret players and two musicians let the chancellor disappear (“Jenseits von Angela - Hereafter by Angela”) or also annex the German federal republic after the reunification to the German Democratic Republic (“Staatsratsvorsitzende küsst man nicht - One doesn’t kiss the heads of states”). With humour and fantasy, they bring fictional events with plenty of actual side-blows onto the stage.
Always in the moment, and yet also committed to its own tradition, every year the Distel Cabaret brings two new stagings to its premiere. The successful cabaret medley “Best of Distel” proves yet again, how great of a name the ensemble has made for itself over the years even outside of Berlin.
The Distel Cabaret has just as successfully survived the DDR as it has the beginnings of the reunification, and is today a unified address for the best political satire—because whether East or West, in the Distel, no one walks away unscathed.
Please note that all performances are in German.
