Centrally located between Alexanderplatz and the Nikolaiviertel (Nikolai Quarter) directly on the Spree is the Direktorenhaus (Director’s House), an administrative building that used to be part of the former State Mint in Berlin. Having stood empty for 17 years following German reunification, it was finally renovated by the Kunstverein Illustrative e.V. (Illustrative Art Association) while taking account of the historical elements of the building.

Since June 2010, the Direktorenhaus has been a new contact point for the art and design scene in Berlin. This is where internationally famous designers and artists present themselves to the public. The experimental directives containing social impact play with the prejudices of the visitors and break through familiar boundaries. The initiators of the Direktorenhaus deliberately explore between the boundaries of free and applied art, and make use of changing exhibitions to broach the question “What is art, what is design?”.
