It finally became the German Symphony Orchestra of Berlin in 1993.
Ferenc Fricsay became the orchestra’s first chief conductor. He was followed by Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kent Nagano and lastly by Ingo Metzmacher until 2010. Tugan Sokhiev becomes Music Director in the 2012/13 season for an initial period of four years. He is the newly appointed Music Director Designate with immediate effect.
