Expressionist art in idyllic surroundings
Keywords
The Brücke (Bridge) Museum holds the largest collection of art by the expressionist ‘Brücke’ group, which was founded in Dresden in 1905: around 400 paintings and thousands of drawings, water colour paintings and original graphics can be seen here. The collection is complemented with wooden sculptures, numerous documents and objects d’art by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Fritz Bleyl, Max Pechstein, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Otto Mueller and Emil Nolde. The museum also presents works by artists, which were closely connected to the ‘Brücke’ group, including Walter Gramattée, Otto Herbig, Max Kaus, Anton Kerschbaumer and the sculptor Emy Roeder.
The idyllic setting for the Brücke Museum, situated directly at the edge of the beautiful Grunewald forest, represents one of the main principles of the ‘Brücke’ movement: building a bridge to the surrounding nature - and of course also invites for long, peaceful walks after a museum visit.
