Places to remember

World history was written in Berlin. Prussian emperors and kings resided here, and from 1933 to 1945 Berlin was the centre of the contemptuous and destructive National Socialist rule. After the end of the Second World War, Berlin was divided. The Wall between East and West Berlin also stood for the Cold War period. When the Wall finally fell on 3 November 1989 after a peaceful revolution, the whole world celebrated!

In recent decades, Berlin has become a city of freedom and tolerance that today inspires people all over the world. Why? Because in Berlin people do not forget what unfreedom feels like.
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe stands in the heart of the capital, and countless monuments, documentation centres and exhibitions throughout Berlin serve as reminders and keep memories alive. The Berlin Wall Memorial or the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, the former state prison of the GDR, are unique, as are the legendary border station Checkpoint Charlie or the Palace of Tears
