Fundamental research for the community
It has to do with fundamental research in all areas, meaning: in the humanities, natural, biological and social sciences. And that in service of the community. The Max Planck Gesellschaft takes on new research directions, works interdisciplinarily and often with personnel and equipment at high output. The Max Planck Gesellschaft for the Advancement of Sciences e.V. belongs to the most important furtherers of research outside of universities. It has its official headquarters in Berlin and is an independent non-profit research organisation.
The Max Planck Gesellschaft was founded in 1948, as a successor to the already since 1911 existing “Kaiser Wilhelm Gesellschaft for the Advancement of Sciences”. Today, it carries on its work in 80 institutions and research facilities throughout all of Germany, in which around 4,800 scientists are employed. There work around 7,000 additional junior staff and guest researchers within the frameworks for the promotion of young scientific researchers within the institutes of the Max Planck Gesellschaft. In Berlin alone, there are Max Planck Institutes for education research, molecular genetics, infection biology, and for the history of science. Added to this, moreover, is the Fritz Haber Institut der Max Planck Gesellschaft.
