A Stroll Down the magnificent boulevard.
The birds chirp and the first rays of sunlight begin to warm the city's souls – perfect conditions for a relaxed stroll down Kurfürstendamm in the heart of the western part of Berlin: walking along the tree-lined street, one is almost hypnotically invited to shop by the shops’ large display windows, while the cafes offer excellent spots for lounging with their pavement bistro tables.
Yet the traditional boulevard offers even more! With the Berlin WelcomeCard, you receive interesting offers and worthwhile discounts all along Kurfürstendamm. Go exploring!
Zoological Garden
A visit to Kurfürstendamm can be well combined with a visit to Berlin's Zoological Garden. After a few steps past the famous elephant gate on Budapester Strasse, one enters a completely different world. Leave the city noise behind you and spend the day in the peaceful atmosphere of the zoo with all of its animals and green pathways. Although one can easily spend the whole day here – the aquarium's three floors are an attraction in itself, Ku'damm, however, has even more to offer.
Europa Center and “Stroll Mile“
The Europa Center is located on the other side of Budapester Strasse. The 300 ft (103 m) tall building dates from the 1960’s and is now a protected historical monument. It features around 70 shops and cafes as well as other attractions such as the famous “Time Flow Clock“ by artist Bernard Gitton. The “Die Stachelschweine“ cabaret ensemble is also housed here and entertains the crowds every evening with punchlines that take a stab at politics, world events, and local news.
Lunch Break and City Tour
In front of the Europa Center one can stroll by the Globe Fountain, endearingly referred to by Berliners as the “water meatballs,“ to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, one of Berlin's oldest city symbols. At the junction with Joachimstaler Strasse, you now have to decide whether to continue a walking tour or to explore the entire city with one of the yellow city tour buses. With City Circle Sightseeing Tours visitors to Berlin can see all the highlights of the city in comfort.
Berlin's Flair, History, and Culture
Continuing west, the street transforms into a genuine boulevard. The hustle and bustle give way to more elegant shops and larger display windows. The street eventually leads to the Ku'damm-Karree shopping center. The permanent exhibition here, The Story of Berlin, offers a particularly exciting history of the city. Besides interesting insights into the diversity of Berlin's lifestyles, it also offers tours of an original, preserved nuclear bomb shelter underneath Kurfürstendamm. Alternatively, the Dressler cafe and restaurant at the shopping center's entrance invites you to observe Kurfürstendamm’S thriving life and ponder your plans for the evening.
Theatres and Clubs Around Ku'damm
The traditional Theater & Komödie am Kurfürstendamm is just round the corner in the Ku'damm-Karree. Theatre greats such as Katharina Thalbach or Walter Plathe can be seen on this renowned stage. However, there are also a number of other attractions nearby. On Hardenbergstrasse up near Ernst-Reuter-Platz, you can find the Renaissance-Theater, for example. The magnificent art nouveau architecture promises a delightful evening at the theatre. From there it is a short walk to the Cascade Club, a great spot for a drink after the show.
On the other side of Kurfürstendamm, you immediately notice the Bar jeder Vernunft, a romantic venue on Schaperstrasse, where cabaret and chanson-evenings are often on the menu. Also nearby is the Xantener Eck, where you can comfortably enjoy the dying moments of a lovely Berlin evening. Another highlight in the neighborhood is the Theater des Westens. This traditional theatre is currently staging a production of Queen’s popular musical “We Will Rock You.“ And whoever feels the need to rock out a little on their own can always visit the Cheers Karaoke Bar on Wilmersdorfer Strasse.
