Berlin is a hub for top international sport. Around 700 athletes from almost 35 different sports train at the Olympics Support Centre. Berlin's sport clubs are known throughout Germany and Europe: the football clubs Hertha BSC and Union Berlin, the basketball players from Alba Berlin or the crack ice hockey players nick-named the 'polar bears'. Berlin's volleyball and water polo teams are also highly successful. Visitors from all over the world come here every year for the Berlin Marathon, at which millions of spectators cheer on the world's finest long-distance runners.
