At the Christopher Street Day Berlin lesbians, gay men, transgender people, intersex and bisexual people demonstrate for equal rights and protest against all forms of discrimination in society. But it is also a joyful occasion, as on CSD, demonstrators celebrate the rights they have won over the last few decades.

Happy Pride 2016
Traditionally, many other LGBTI* events take place prior to the CSD in Berlin - parties, events, and street festivals. Amongst others, celebrations include CSD on the Spree and the Lesbian-Gay Street Party on July 16-17, 2016.

CSD Berlin: Demonstration to the Victory Column
CSD Berlin is a huge party on the streets of Berlin – and at the same time it is becoming increasingly more political. For example, people protest for equal marriage rights. Every year, there is a special motto which sums up the main CSD demands. About half a million people demonstrate for the rights of homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, and transgender people – heterosexual people also come along to support them.

The History of CSD

It all began in New York City. In 1969, gay people resisted police oppression for the first time in the Stonewall Bar in Christopher Street. In the years that followed, this day was remembered with a procession in New York. Christopher Street Days and Gay Prides now take place all over the world.

In Berlin, the "little" CSD march in Kreuzberg has long been a tradition in Berlin in addition to the big pride march that starts on Kurfürstendamm. Although there's been a change in organisers, some Kreuzberg clubs and activists wanted to keep this tradition alive and are calling for a CSD march in Kreuzberg. Another CSD organised by the Aktionsbündnis CSD took place for the first time in 2014, putting its focus on international human rights under the motto "Respect for diversity! Stop the backwards march! Guarantee human rights in Germany, Europe and the world!".
