KaDeWe

Place of promises

One walks slowly, through the large heavy latticework decorated gate, past the porter in the livery, into the entrance hall. It is usually elaborately decorated and resembles more of a theatre-backdrop than the interior of a shopping-centre—and that of course it is really not—simply just a shopping-centre. The KaDeWe is more the place of luxury, of consumption, and of course also the place of eternal temptations for us shopaholics. It is also the place, on the gourmet floor, where friends meet each other for a bite on Saturday afternoon. Here, I get the usually sold out swans out of filo pastry with cheese filling, and clotted cream for the scones. Whenever everything is grey and dreary, I go to the KaDeWe, visit my crockery and the gourmet floor with all its delicacies. Thereby, I don’t have to buy anything; the place with all of its promises and possibilities already offers enough lustre for a dreary day.
