Mentioned back in last summer’s edition of NEON magazine, the Eismanufaktur ice-cream parlours in the Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Berlin-Mitte local neighbourhoods had established themselves as THE tip for the summer. Reason enough, I thought, to pay a visit to one of them! As I am one of those who only ever orders vanilla ice-cream, shying well away from unwanted experiments with ice-creams in strange colours, I naturally felt somewhat daunted by the selection on offer in the ice-cream parlour in Kreuzberg’s Graefestraße. Alongside the obligatory all-time vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavoured favourites, they also had such illustriously soundings flavours like thyme and honey, white chocolate, passion fruit sorbet, pistachio and even cocoa sorbet with orange oil – and all of these of course without any artificial flavouring or colouring agents or any custard powder. In view of the vast choice on offer, I was indeed grateful to the girl serving who patiently let me taste some of the more exotic flavours, until I finally decided on vanilla yet again – but this time only as one of the three scoops – I actually managed to pluck enough courage to order a scoop of white chocolate and – taking a real chance here I thought – a scoop of thyme and honey! And – believe it or not – it all tasted very delicious, and I could actually taste the thyme and honey flavours! And so, sucking on my ice-cream in the night, my day had actually found the perfect end.
