The premium cinema
The elaborately ruffled curtain opens in front of the big screen, the shell-shaped hall is darkened and I slip back comfortably in my chair and watch what is happening on the screen. The Astor Film Lounge is a special cinema - it was opened in 2008 as the first premium cinema and since then has gained an excellent reputation among Berlin movie-goers.
The cinema not only offers a special service with a cloakroom, valet parking and food and drinks in the hall; it also has exceptionally comfortable seats with plenty of legroom even for people taller than 1.60 m and has preserved the character of an old movie house. The curved, elegant shell shape has been maintained from the fifties and gives the room a festive elegance supported by soft pastel colours.
The full splendour of the cinema is revealed at the Sunday matinees when great classics like Lawrence of Arabia or Spartacus are shown in their 70mm versions. A great setting for major films.
