Smoked “Schweinshaxe” (pork knuckle) with mushy peas is one of the best-known Berlin dishes, together with curry sausage and “Bouletten” (meat balls). The word “Bulette” goes back to the Hugenots, who fled to the area from France 300 years ago. The local cuisine is strongly influenced by past immigration, e.g. from Bohemia and East Prussia, but the dishes are much simplified. Typical Berliners prefer their food to be filling rather than over-fussy.
