They didn't even have a recording contract, when their first video became an overnight MTV hit. “Wir sind Helden” (“We are heroes”) have been famous for years but remain ordinary Berliners. “Get the sledgehammer, they’ve put us on a pedestal, and every idiot knows that kills love”, as one of their songs runs. The band do not want to be stars: they just want to make great music. In 2000, the band was formed by Berlin-born singer Judith Holofernes, drummer Pola Roy and guitarist and keyboarder Jean-Michel Tourette. Bass player Mark Tavassol joined soon after. Two year later, the band issued their first EP in 3,000 copies and instantly became known throughout Berlin. Soon after, their “Guten Tag” stormed the German single charts. The song is typical of the band in its criticism of consumerism and the establishment. They were the pioneers of the "Neue Neue Deutsche Welle" (New New German Wave), which put German-language music back on the map. The band has since published four albums, selling more than 1.5 million copies. The singer Judith Holofernes and the drummer Pola Roy are married with two children.
