Tour 6 - Berlin in the 1930s and 40s

On the trail of the past.

The day begins with a tour of the Olympic Stadium, home to the XI Olympic Games in 1936. The nearby S-Bahn (city railway) takes you to “Hackescher Markt” station, which is close to the Anne Frank Museum. A stroll down the “Unter den Linden” boulevard will take you past the Neue Wache and Bebelplatz square, the scene of Nazi bookburning in 1933. Once you walk through the Brandenburg Gate, you’ll see the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe ‑ and its Information Centre is also well worth a visit.

Then carry on to Wilhelmstrasse, which was once the location for the Old and New Imperial Chancellery, Hitler’s Bunker, the Ministry of Propaganda and Public Enlightenment, the Ministry of the German Luftwaffe (today housing the Ministry of Finance) and the Reich Security Main Office, State Police and the Gestapo (site now home to “Topography of Terror” exhibition). In the evening, you can visit the restaurant Berliner Republik and replay the day's happenings.
