The opening match of the FIFA Women’s Football World Cup in the Olympic Stadium rung in a eventful summer of sport in Berlin. Thanks to its magnificent stadia and competition arenas, Berlin is and remains an attractive location for top-class sporting events. The Olympic stadium, a listed site in the western part of the city, is not only the home of Hertha BSC, freshly promoted to the top flight in professional football, but also the annual venue of the International Athletics Meet (ISTAF). While over in the eastern part of the city, the o2 World arena is home to both the Alba Berlin basketball and Berlin Eisbären (Polar Bears) ice-hockey teams.
